My URL makes me the fuckin’ authority on blood caste, alright? I figured this might help someone if they wanna make a fantroll or just refresh themselves on how the hemospectrum works.
Need to find out how long a Rust blood lives? Ever wondered what the fuck is up with Jade bloods? Curious about seadwellers? This guide might help.
Lifespan: 12-24 sweeps, averaging about 18 sweeps.
Population: Very high
Typical Location: Rural, Land
The lowest caste possible, barring mutants. Hussie stated here that the average lifespan would be less than a human’s, as low as 30 human years, or approximately 14 sweeps. Doc Scratch also states here that the Handmaid’s lifespan would only be a dozen sweeps or two.
Rust bloods commonly have psychic powers, but are weak physically. A rust blooded troll would no doubt bruise easily and become fatigued quickly. They would bleed out faster than any over caste. They are the first to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
There are more rust bloods than any other caste, although they die youngest and more frequently than higher castes.
Rust bloods tend to live in rural areas, secluded from other trolls. Aradia and Damara both lived in relative isolation, far away from the urban centers and lawnrings where high castes lived, but close enough to meet other lowbloods (Tavros, Rufioh).
A rust blood’s lusus would likely be a land animal of a more tame variety, and would not be extremely large or dangerous, nor would they require much effort to feed.
Rust bloods’ clothes are mandated to be simple, as all lowbloods are required to appear unimportant and trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, or black.
Aradia’s blood colour is #a10000.
Lifespan: 14-34 sweeps, averaging about 24 sweeps.
Population: Very high
Typical Location: Rural, Land
The second lowest caste. They would have similar life spans to Rust bloods, though slightly longer, likely maxing out around 34 sweeps.
There have been a very small number of brownblooded trolls who have grown wings due to a mutation, and more often than not any that would have wings are culled as wigglers due to being abnormal. However, it’s fairly common for a brownblood to have psychic powers, which make up for their relatively low physical strength.
Brownbloods have a slightly higher blood volume than rust bloods, and are the second to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
The population of brownbloods nearly matches that of rust bloods, and they live in rural settings as well, typically inland, although Tavros lived near the shore.
A brownblood’s lusus would likely be a land based animal that is neither dangerous nor extremely large, and may or may not take significant efforts to feed.
Brownbloods’ clothes are mandated to be simple, as all lowbloods are required to appear unimportant and trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, or black.
Tavros’ blood colour is #a15000
Lifespan: 20-40 sweeps, averaging about 30 sweeps.
Typical Location: Urban/Suburban, Land
Powers: Frequently and with great intensity
The highest caste of the “Lowblood” class. They have a longer lifespan than brown bloods, pushing the boundary up to an approximate human lifespan, or a maximum of 40 sweeps.
Yellow blooded trolls are prone to extremely strong psychic abilities, though the rate at which they occur are much lower than that of lower castes. Where the ratio for a red or brown blood might be as high as 8 in 10, for a yellow blood the ratio would be far lower, closer to 4 in 10. However, the abilities would be vastly amplified, thus making up for the rarity of the trait.
There are fewer yellow bloods than the lower two of the Low Blood range, as the hatch rate is lower and their aptitude for immense psychic power often burns them out extremely young, ultimately resulting in an early death or culling.
A yellow blood’s lusus would likely be a land creature that may or may not be large in size, though the apparent danger poses by the creature may be debatable. The lusus would likely take moderate effort to keep fed.
Yellow bloods, as seen in canon, bleed out quickly, but have a greater blood volume than a brown blood, resulting in an extended period of exsanguination before death. Yellow bloods are more resistant to psychic or energy based attacks, but are as weak as any other Low Blood when faced with a physical confrontation. They are next in line after brownbloods to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
Yellow bloods tend to live in more urban areas such as cities, although some may live in lawnrings, depending on the size requirement of keeping their lusus.
Yellow bloods’ clothes are mandated to be simple, as all lowbloods are required to appear unimportant and trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, or black.
Sollux’s blood colour is #a1a100.
Typical Location: Unknown
We really don’t know anything about Limebloods yet!
According to Calliope, Limebloods possessed very strong and unique abilities. Whether this implies great physical strength, high psychic power, or perhaps both, is currently unknown.
They were once very populous, but were hunted to extinction by other castes (likely High Bloods) because they were too strong, which likely threw off the Caste system.
Kankri hints that Limebloods were oppressed even on peaceful Beforus, stating that the term “Yellowgreen” is preferable to “Lime” due to historical implications.
Lime blood should be #658200, however Calliope’s blood seen here is #2ed73a.
Lifespan: 50-70 sweeps, averaging about 60 sweeps.
Typical Location: Rural/Suburban, Land
Alternian “middle class”. The lowest hue of the Midbloods, olive bloods’ lifespans begin to push the boundaries of a hundred human years, spanning anywhere from 50-70 sweeps.
Equius remarks that olive is “okay but not great”, given that they are not classified as Low Blooded, but do not reap the benefits of psychic abilities nor amplified strength that lower castes and higher castes possess, respectively. Olive bloods tend to have very average abilities, but are physically stronger than any Low Blood.
Olive bloods are relatively common, and generally don’t attract the attention of predators. They are mentally very stable and presumably have remarkable control of their tempers.
An olive blood’s lusus would likely be a sturdier land creature, probably reasonably large in size. Feeding may or may not be an undertaking, however the creature is unlikely to be especially dangerous.
Olive bloods have a standard blood volume for a troll, and take a considerable amount of time to bleed out completely. They are the fourth caste to die in the event of the Vast Glub. They are as susceptible to psychic attacks as any lower caste.
An olive blood’s hive may be located somewhere hidden or out-of-the way, but they might also live in a lawnring, or other semi-suburban area.
Olive bloods’ clothes are mandated to be fairly simple, as midbloods are not supposed to appear flashy or fancy, and trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, black, or subtle hints of castes lower than their own.
Nepeta’s blood colour is #416600.
Lifespan: 90-100 sweeps, averaging about 92 sweeps.
Typical Location: Suburban/Rural, typically secluded
Powers: None, potential to become a Rainbow Drinker
A rare blood caste that is almost entirely female. Some members of the jade caste may be Rainbow Drinkers, however not all are. Jade bloods may or may not be resistant to the Alternian Sun’s intense rays, and some may even enjoy it. Their lifespan excels much further than that of an olive blood, suggested by the long lifespan of the Dolorosa (having lived to see the Sufferer’s as well as Mindfang’s lifetimes), maxing out at around 100 sweeps.
Jade bloods are often given special treatment due to their rarity, including exotic and rare lusii. Only once in Alternian history has a Mother Grub adopted a wiggler as a charge, however there are many other rare and prestigious creatures on Alternia that could possess Jade blood and adopt a wiggler.
Jade bloods do not possess any powers aside from the potential to become a Rainbow Drinker, however they have an immense blood volume that rivals that of even a cerulean blood, resulting in high chances of survival in case of a potentially fatal conflict.
In sweeps past, adult jade bloods tended to the brooding caverns and looked after the Mother Grub, however after mature trolls were banished from Alternia after the Summoner’s revolt, they no longer are required to serve such a purpose, perhaps contributing to their apparent rarity.
Jade bloods may be especially susceptible to psychic attack, despite being a fairly high caste, suggested by the Dolorosa’s manipulation by Mindfang. They are the fifth caste to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
Jade bloods tend to make their hives ostentatious and secluded, as they are permitted to due to their special status. Some make their homes in the dangerous Alternian desert where the dead rise during the day, while others may even have massive and ornate hives built for them anywhere they please, typically staying away from the heart of large urban centers.
Jade bloods’ clothes are encouraged to remain fairly simple, as midbloods are not supposed to appear flashy or fancy, and trolls think fashion is stupid. However, their status affords them a margin of leeway, as we can see with Kanaya’s flair for fashion. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, black, or subtle hints of castes lower than their own, however some trolls may break these rules unapologetically, and may or may not be culled for such arrogance.
Kanaya’s blood colour is #078446.
Lifespan: 130-150 sweeps, averaging about 140 sweeps.
Typical Location: Urban, not uncommonly rural
Powers: None, highly intelligent
A teal blooded troll is considered to be close to nobility, but it still confined to the class of Midbloods. Tealbloods have lifespans a little longer than that of a jade blood, spanning as many as 150 sweeps.
Teal bloods are less common that olive bloods but are by no means rare. Teal blooded lusii tend to be on the more dangerous scale of creatures, and may be significantly larger than the troll itself. Feeding the lusus is likely a huge undertaking.
Teal bloods have a high blood volume and can be severely injured and bleeding for some time before succumbing to blood loss. They do not possess psychic powers and have about average strength, however they tend to be extremely mentally keen and do well in professions that require such a trait. Most if not all teal bloods take up work as a civil servant, and all Legislacerators are teal blooded (while not all teal bloods are Legislacerators). They are the sixth caste to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
Teal bloods will make their hive wherever they see fit, keeping in mind the maintenance of a potentially deadly or enormous lusus. In general they will gravitate towards large urban centers, but there are many cases of teal bloods constructing rural hives instead.
Teal bloods’ clothes are mandated to be fairly simple, as midbloods are not supposed to appear flashy or fancy, and trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, black, or subtle hints of castes lower than their own.
Terezi’s blood colour is #008282.
Lifespan: 400-500 sweeps, averaging about 450 sweeps.
Typical Location: Rural
Cerulean bloods are the first caste of the Alternian aristocracy, and are known as one of the notorious Blue Bloods. Cerulean trolls are known to live for centuries, topping out at a maximum of 500 sweeps. Cerulean bloods tend to be male.
Cerulean bloods are rather uncommon, and do not posses any psychic powers. There have historically been a handful of cases in which a cerulean blood has mutated such powers, but more often than not such genetic outliers are culled early on in life. However, cerulean trolls are inherently keen and quick to act, which is a dangerous combination with their heightened strength and unstable nature as a higher blooded caste. They are a danger to themselves as well as others.
A cerulean blood’s lusus is almost certainly very large and very dangerous, and feeding is guaranteed to be a problematic experience for the troll.
Cerulean bloods have a very high blood volume, as seen with Vriska in canon, and can bleed out for hours before death occurs, provided no internal organs are severely damaged. They are the seventh caste to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
A cerulean blood will typically make their hive away from urban centers, where they can tend to their lusus easily. Their hives are almost always grandiose and extravagant in nature, as they are nobility and they do so simply because they can.
As a higher blooded caste, cerulean bloods are immune to a psychic attacks from lower castes.
Cerulean bloods’ clothes are encouraged to be fairly simple, however these rules are seldom adhered to, despite the fact that trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, black, or subtle hints of castes lower than their own, however some may wear darker shades of the aforementioned hues.
Vriska’s blood colour is #004182.
Lifespan: 600-800 sweeps, averaging about 700 sweeps.
Typical Location: Rural/Suburban
Indigo bloods are the core of the Blue Blooded nobility. They have vast lifespans, the shortest of which reaches approximately 600 sweeps. Indigo bloods tend to be male.
Rarer still than cerulean bloods, indigo bloods are stronger physically than ceruleans, and have no psychic abilities, however all higher castes endeavor to be very well educated. Indigo bloods have extremely violent tempers. They are incredibly unstable when not pacified by a moirail. They are very dangerous.
Indigo bloods and the sea-dwelling castes have an intense mutual hatred for one another; a blood-feud that has persisted for thousands of sweeps.
An indigo blood’s lusus is assuredly large and dangerous, as well as difficult to keep fed, however there have been some cases in which indigo lusii have been more of a servant to their charge, as opposed to a companion or warden. This may be due to indigo blood’s natural air of entitlement and self-worth, which has been ingrained in all those of the blood colour for thousands of sweeps.
Indigo bloods have a very high blood volume and can bleed out for hours before death occurs, provided no internal organs are severely damaged. They are the eighth caste to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
An indigo blooded troll’s hive is geographically inclined to the same grounds as a cerulean blood, however they may seek out more urban locations provided their lusus is the aforementioned servant type. Their hives may be equal to if not more extravagant and foreboding than a cerulean’s.
As a higher blooded caste, indigo bloods are immune to a psychic attacks from lower castes.
Indigo bloods’ clothes are permitted to have some semblance of decorum, despite the fact that trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear hints of their blood colour, gray, black, or subtle hints of castes lower than their own, however some may wear darker shades of the aforementioned hues, and patterns such as stripes may be allowed.
Equius’ blood colour is #0021cb.
Lifespan: 700-900 sweeps, averaging about 800 sweeps.
Typical Location: Seaside/Outskirts
Purple bloods are the infamous High Bloods of Alternia, though the High Blood class of course extends to the seadwelling castes as well. Purple bloods are the highest caste to live on land and have an impressive lifespan, maxing out at 900 sweeps. Purple bloods tend to be male.
Purple bloods are as rare as cerulean bloods, and are the strongest land dwelling caste. They do not have psychic abilities, however they tend to have the gift of chucklevoodoos, to keep lower castes in line. They tend to abuse these powers, which can cause acute insanity in some cases.
They attain this ability through their religion and faith in the Mirthful Messiahs, rather than through genetic inheritance. Due to these powers, some purple bloods become a sort of law enforcement, including a subjugglator, however not all purple blooded trolls do so. While most members of the caste bear some faith in the religious lore regarding “capricious minstrels”, there are a significant number who do not follow the beliefs as closely or devoutly as others. Purple bloods are extremely dangerous and unstable.
A purple blood’s lusus is large and dangerous, and may or may not be difficult to feed; in some cases the lusus has been capable enough to find their own food. The creature may be land or sea based, as purple bloods tend to live near water.
Purple bloods have the highest blood volume of any land dwelling caste and can bleed out for hours before death occurs, even if mortally wounded. They are the ninth caste to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
A purple blood’s hive will almost certainly be located near water, however not entirely cut off from civilization. Rather than a seaside within an urban or rural area, the hive would like be on the outskirts of both, hugging the shoreline. The hive is permitted to be as large and grandiose and the purple blood desires.
As a high blooded caste, purple bloods are immune to a psychic attacks from lower castes.
Purple bloods’ clothes are permitted to be marginally flashy, despite the fact that trolls think fashion is stupid. They may wear their blood colour, gray, black, or the blood colours of castes lower than their own. Some may wear darker shades of the aforementioned hues, and patterns such as stripes, polka dots, or plaid may be allowed.
Gamzee’s blood colour is #440a7f.
Lifespan: 1000-2000 sweeps, averaging about 1500 sweeps.
Population: Very Low
Typical Location: Almost exclusively underwater
Violet bloods are the first tier of seadwelling trolls and the only caste aside from fuchsia that is such. Violet bloods are Alternian royalty, and they are rarer still than the High Blood land dwelling castes. Violet bloods are incredibly strong (as necessity dictates, living primarily underwater) and live easily for a thousand sweeps if not more. Being royalty, violet bloods are afforded a considerable amount of wealth and privilege. Violet bloods are distributed equally between the sexes.
Seadwellers possess gills on their bodies and fins on the sides of their heads to facilitate their underwater habitat, and tend to have sharper, larger teeth than land dwelling trolls. They possess no psychic powers whatsoever, but are the strongest caste barring fuchsia, and are extremely violent and will almost certainly murder those who incur their displeasure with no delay. Very seldom has a violet blood ever been punished for killing too freely, as they generally answer only to the Empress herself. Violet bloods are extremely unstable and dangerous and are more prone to violent nightmares than any other caste.
A violet blood’s lusus would be an aquatic creature, likely a predator or other imposing creature. Feeding the lusus is likely a challenge when attempted, but the creature assuredly hunts on its own time due it natural instinct. The lusus is almost guaranteed to be dangerous.
Violet bloods have the second highest blood volume of any caste, and can bleed for almost a full day before dying, even if severely injured. They are the tenth caste to die in the event of the Vast Glub.
A violet blood’s hive is generally underwater, however historically some have built their hives on small islands, caves, shipwrecks, or with a small dock leading to shore, to facilitate travel or hunting. The hive will likely be sprawling and immense, more often than not resembling a sort of castle.
Violet bloods are given a lot of permissions and leeway that other castes do not benefit from, earning the jealousy and distrust of most landdwelling castes. As an extremely high caste, violet bloods are immune the psychic attacks.
Violet bloods’ are permitted to wear what they please, including jewelry, despite the fact that trolls think fashion is stupid. Violet bloods are prone to over-accessorize and wear brighter colours than any other caste, simply because they can and because it reasserts their high status over others.
Eridan’s blood colour is #6a006a.
Lifespan: 6000-8000 sweeps, averaging about 7000 sweeps.
Population: Extremely Rare
Typical Location: Underwater
Powers: None, Empress has the ability to prolong life
Fuchsia is the highest possible caste for any troll, and there are generally only two alive at any given time; the current Empress, and her Heir Apparent. The caste is predominantly female, and males and “spare” tyrian bloods are culled as wigglers to prevent competition over the throne. Fuchsia bloods naturally live for millennia, however the Empress has the ability to prolong not only her life but the lives of others. It is unknown if this ability is unique to her, or all tyrian bloods.
Fuchsia bloods are capable of horrific violence and rage, but have more control over themselves than lower castes. They are well suited to planning and keeping their subjects in check (often through violence), and are as physically strong as any other seadweller. They are the only caste that could survive the Vast Glub, and have such a high blood volume that it would take several days for them to bleed out if gravely injured.
While the Empress and her Heir Apparent will always share a lusus (Gl’bgolyb) and fight for the throne, there are other sea creatures possessing tyrian blood, suggesting that it may be possible for other tyrian bloods to be adopted by a lusus, were they able to avoid being culled. However, this has never happened in all of Alternian history, and would have to be a freak occurrence. The Empress herself kills any rival for the throne once she reaches adult age.
A tyrian blood’s hive is literally a giant palace. Inside it is highly decorated and lavish, and entirely underwater, away from other trolls save for a few seadwelling servants.
As the highest caste, tyrian bloods are immune to psychic attacks, and any attack whatsoever on a tyrian blood is considered treason, and will reward the perpetrator with an execution.
Tyrian bloods’ may wear whatever they please.
Feferi’s blood colour is #99004d.
